Hipparchus of Nicaea: The pioneer of celestial measurement and trigonometry

Greek astronomer, mathematician, and geographer of the 2nd century BC, Hipparchus embodies a pivotal historical transition: from a mythologized sky to a measured sky. Faced with the celestial expanse, Hipparchus accomplished an unprecedented indexing work: recording ecliptic coordinates and apparent brightness for ~850 stars across a standardized 1 to 6 magnitude scale.
